An Example System:

A typical domestic solar photovoltaic system, mounted on an existing roof, with an array size of 4.0kW:

  • £693 per year from the Generation Tariff
  • £50 per year from the Export Tariff
  • £200 per year reduction in Energy Bills
  • £943 per year (for 25 years, index linked) Total

This assumes a well oriented, un-shaded system, and 50% of electricity generated exported. The saving on electricity will increase if more generated electricity is used in the home.

Is Your Home Suitable for Solar?

Using this check-list, see if your home is ready for solar:

  • I have an un-shaded roof facing east, south, or west.
    North facing, or heavily shaded roofs are unsuitable for a PV array.
  • I Own the property.
    i.e. Permission must be obtained from your landlord if property rented.
  • My property is not a listed building, or in a conservation area.
    You don't need planning permission for most home solar arrays, but check first with your local planning officer, especially if your building is listed, or is in a conservation area or World Heritage Site.
  • My property is not a basement or mid-floor flat.
    These types of property are unsuitable for solar panels.

If your home meets these requirements, then it may be suitable for a solar photovoltaic system.
